22 Ships, Hong Kong

22 Ships is Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton’s buzzy tapas bar on Ship Street in Wan Chai. Offering imaginative and reasonably priced food, ‘Ships’ is a hit with queues at 9pm even on a Tuesday night. The wait, however, is worth it being the single best meal we ate while in Hong Kong and believe me, that is saying something. While you’re waiting, head to the back bar of sister restaurant Ham & Sherry for a cocktail or two and a bar snack; the deep-fried chorizo wrapped in potato is a heart-attack inducing delight.

Taking a seat at ‘Ships’ is a great experience with the kitchen and bar occupying the central portion of the room. Space is tight, so expect to get to know your fellow diners and the team in the kitchen. Executive Chef Nathan ‘Nate’ Green contributed enormously to our enjoyment of the evening, and to our understanding of Hong Kong. The food from the kitchen is creative and tasty with dishes including a Jamón, manchego and truffle toastie, Cauliflower, mushroom, parsley and walnut pesto, and baked bone marrow on toast with gentlemen’s relish and onion jam. We also ate a number of the evening’s specials until our stomaches could hold no more. Highly recommended.
