I just love this Rubik’s cube piece by Claire Fontaine for Third Drawer Down. It is so quirky, so inviting to play with. The Cube Fontaine is a détournement of the cult Rubik’s cube, replacing the different colour fields of each face with that of a view of the surface of the sea or ocean. The pictures of the waves present on the six faces of the cube get dissociated as the object is manipulated, creating currents and compositions. The cube sculpture plays on the contrast between the solid and geometric elements of the Rubik’s cube and the liquid and changing element suggested by the pictures.
