NEL, the creation of chef Nelly Robinson, is a fine-dining jewel located in concrete and wood panelled basement in Surry Hills. The menu is degustation only, catering to meat eaters and vegetarians alike. The individual dishes are probably best described as contemporary interpretations of modern Australian cuisine. Nelly was inspired by his previous experiences including his time working with Michelin-starred chef Nigel Howarth in the UK. His appreciation of fine seasonal produce is showcased to good effect with the menu changing monthly based on availability of produce. This results in an ever changing menu that feels innovative, yet retains an accessible quality. A helpful serving staff and good drinks from the bar round out a good dining experience.
