Boon cafe at Jarern Chai grocer, Sydney

Boon Cafe Counter

Boon Cafe at Jarern Chai grocer has just opened by the team behind the wildly popular Chat Thai on Campbell Street. The cafe opens at 7am serving traditional Thai breakfasts including pork skewers with sticky rice (delicious and amazing value at $7), chicken or crab congee and fried dough sticks with custard. Thai dishes are complemented by coffee from Single Origin Roasters, pastries from Penny Fours and breads from Brickfields. Cold pressed juices are made fresh from the ingredients bought at the produce markets early each morning. Used by the kitchens here and at Chat Thai, they are also for sale in the grocer which also opens at 7am.

The space has been designed by the owners’ son Pat who was also responsible for excellent the Chat Thai fit out. Comprising white and black tiles on the columns and counter, dark wooden floors, old bicycles on the walls and windows looking out to Pitt Street, the atmosphere is wonderful sitting amongst the fresh produce with friendly Thai service.

Boon Cafe is a fresh take on breakfast in Sydney, mixing traditional Thai cooking with locally produced coffee and breads. Their slogan is Sarni by day Isaan by night (sandwich by day, Thai food by night) meaning that Boon Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Expect to see queues in the near future as this place will be hot!

Update: Boon Cafe has become a regular haunt for us since opening, having visited for all meals throughout the day. It is the quirky mix of traditional Thai food and Palisa’s gelato, Penny Fours pastries, Single Origin Roasters coffee and friendly Thai service that is proving itself to be one of the best venues in the Sydney CBD.
